Unit 13 - 7.2 Present a personal self directed A&D project to a specified audience.

“Personal Self-Directed”:

Again this simply means the whole of the project is directed by you and is your idea. Under-pinning this approach will be your ability to come up with ideas and concepts that you can work with. In order to be in that position at the start of your Final Major Project you will need a range of ideas already waiting to go. The way to ensure you’re in that position is to have researched photography using the correct approaches and resources throughout the duration of the course.
Additionally, throughout the duration of the course you would have developed a range of ways of working that will enable your work to be developed over the duration of the assignment in a coherent manner.

“Specified Audience”.
You need to go into the final major project with a solid understanding that photography is made for specific audiences. Photography is made in particular ways, using approaches, materials, with specific characteristics that meet the audience’s needs. Early in the process of conceiving your project and committing the idea to a proposal, you need to be entirely clear who your audience is, what kind of photography you are producing and what the needs and requirements of the audience are.

Throughout the duration of your FMP, you should take the opportunity within the interim Reflective written pieces to reiterate the connection with your audience, ensuring that you will meet the needs of your audience. Primarily this is going to be identified within the research section of your work during the first two weeks of the FMP (Final Major Project).

Audiences - Think about and identify the kind of photography that you are going to make, what type of photography is it and who will it's audience be?

Art Photography - Think Richard Avedon; He's known by many for his fashion photography, but Avedon's most important work was not commissioned, it was  a self generated 'Personal project' called "In the American West". It's this work that Avedon is probably most famous for and is now worth more than his fashion work. This type of work is far more personal and says something about you the photographer, what your aspirations, ethics, political and social, beliefs are. How you connect and feel about the Human Condition. This work tends to be multifaceted, complex and layered and ideal for researching.

Advertising/Commercial - Fashion/Industrial/Cars/products/Architecture/Scientific/

Editorial Photography - Small budget/on spec/magazines/Stock/Travel Photography
